Backstory
At the age of 25, being the youngest in his class, young Alexander Hall received his Captain License. Ambitious, adventurous and wildly romantic, Alexander started off on his first journey, which lead him to Venice. There he met the beautiful young countess Bianca De Lucchi and soon they had fallen madly in love. [read more]
Alexander had already bought the engagement ring, when he was ordered to the next sail. The two young lovers promised that they would be faithful to one another, so, with a picture of his love and a lock of her hair young Alexander embarked on his new adventure – leading him to the Cape Colony.
The young captain braved the strong winds and treacherous currents of the Cape and finally reached the bay. Here he soon made a name for himself and was offered a position in the administrative offices of the British shipping company.
All this time Alexander had not forgotten his Bianca, he sent her a letter asking for her hand in marriage and to join him in the Cape. A few months had passed and against all odds, he received a letter with her reply– she had accepted his hand, and accompanied by her brother, was on her way to board the next ship departing for the Cape.
Overjoyed by her response, Alexander bought a property and started building what he believed would be the grandest villa in the green neighbourhood of Oranjezicht – naturally he named it after his love ‘Villa Bianca’. Following the latest architectural trend, he had the house built in the Victorian style, with ornaments, high ceilings and a beautiful rose garden. As the months passed and the house received its finishing touches, young Alexander waited for his love to arrive in the Cape. There had been no news of the ship that Bianca and her brother had boarded.
The day the last builder left the villa Alexander received the heartbreaking news – the ship with his love on board had capsized just off the coast of Namibia.
Alexander was devasted but did not give up hope, he took a small boat and sailed it up the coast to find his love. After 2 weeks of sailing, he stepped off the boat in Luderitz – nobody had heard anything so he continued to sail for another 3 weeks up to Swakopmund – nothing.
Heartbroken he decided he had to return to Cape Town and to his villa. As he walked through the door there she was, his love, waiting to embrace him.
Bianca and her brother had miraculously survived the shipwreck and were taken to Cape Town by a small vessel.
In the following years Bianca and Alexander filled the beautiful Villa with love, life and laughter, welcoming friends and relatives from all over the world.
Villa Bianca has continued to be a home away from home for many travellers. Honouring Bianca’s and Alexanders love for each other, we continue to welcome guests with the same warm hospitality, as they did.
